Human trafficking and several other charges were recently filed against two individuals after police found a young Ottawa girl who disappeared in April. Forcible confinement and sex crimes accusations are among the charges that the two people will be facing. Following a search, police reportedly received a service call that led to the discovery of the missing girl.
Ottawa police apparently led the investigation, and report that the unit for human trafficking ultimately made the arrests. Officers removed the girl and placed her in a safe place. The man and woman -- 30 and 28 years old -- were awaiting their next court appearances.
Both individuals are accused of allegedly receiving material benefits from sexual services by receiving payment for trafficking a person who was controlled in forcible confinement. Further allegations include the distribution of child pornography and advertising her sexual services. Charges also include procuring an underage person, and trafficking a child younger than 18 years by recruiting and exercising control. Additionally, the man also faces an assault charge for causing physical harm along with the forcible confinement charge.
The charges against these individuals are mere allegations until and only if the Crown can actually prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in court. However, being accused of sex crimes can result in severe consequences -- especially if a defendant is convicted. The logical step for any Ottawa resident facing such charges would be to secure the guidance and support of an experienced criminal defence lawyer to handle the legal proceedings in a way that is geared toward achieving a favourable outcome.
